Do you go up into the hills, to Kalamunda and Mundaring?

We do. Kalamunda, Mundaring, Swan View, Glen Forrest, Darlington, Sawyers Valley and Forrestfield are all in our area. Hills trips take longer and accessible vehicles are scarcer out there, so pre-book where you can, and book the return leg at the same time as the outbound.

How long does it take to get from Midland to Perth Airport?

Usually about 15 minutes, which makes Midland one of the closest outer suburbs to the terminals. Tell us the terminal number and the airline when you book so we use the right accessible set-down bay, and allow extra time on public holidays and school holidays when the terminal roads back up.

My driveway is steep and unsealed. Is that a problem?

Not if we know about it. The ramp needs a reasonably flat surface to land on, so the driver will choose the safest spot, which may be the top of the driveway or the road rather than right at the door. Mention the gradient, the surface and any tight turns when you book, and we will plan the approach before we arrive.

Can you take me to a Swan Valley winery or Whiteman Park for the day?

Yes, and both are popular day trips from Midland. Our maxi vehicles carry a wheelchair passenger together with family or support workers in the one vehicle. For a day out we would suggest booking the return leg at the same time, because the Valley is a long empty run back for a driver and same-day returns from out there are hard to fill.

Accessible transport for Midland and the hills

St John of God Midland Public and Private Hospital changed how the eastern corridor travels. It brought an emergency department, maternity, surgery and a large outpatient load to a suburb that used to send everyone west, which means a lot of appointments that once involved a forty-minute run to the city now happen locally. For a wheelchair user that is a real saving, both in fare and in fatigue.

What it did not change is the geography behind Midland. Kalamunda, Mundaring, Swan View, Glen Forrest and Darlington sit up the hill on winding roads with steep driveways, gravel verges and, in a good number of cases, no footpath at all. Those are the pick-ups where a driver's judgement about where to set the ramp down matters most, and where telling us about the approach in advance genuinely changes how the trip goes.

Midland is also close to Perth Airport, roughly fifteen minutes on a clear run. That makes it one of the few outer suburbs where an early flight does not mean a pre-dawn pick-up, and it makes the airport run one of the more affordable ones on the metered rate.

Common trips from Midland

Approximate driving times outside peak. Great Eastern Highway and Roe Highway are the two that decide most of these.

Midland to Perth Airport, T1 to T4: About 15 minutes. One of the shortest airport runs of any outer suburb in Perth, and a genuine advantage for early departures.
Midland to Perth CBD: About 25 to 30 minutes on Great Eastern Highway or the Tonkin and Graham Farmer route, longer in the morning peak.
Midland to St John of God Midland: Minutes from anywhere in the 6056 area. Tell us whether you need the public or private entrance, or the emergency department.
Midland to Royal Perth Hospital: About 25 minutes. Still a frequent run for specialist referrals that Midland does not handle locally.
Midland to Kalamunda and the hills: 15 to 25 minutes up the scarp, depending how far along the ridge you are. Worth pre-booking, and worth telling us about the driveway.

Hills pick-ups, and why the approach matters

Steep driveways are a ramp problem, not a distance problem

A wheelchair ramp needs a shallow enough gradient to be safe, and it needs somewhere flat at the bottom of it to land. On a hills property with a driveway that drops away from the house, the flattest ground is often not next to the front door. Our drivers will position the vehicle wherever the ramp can be deployed safely, which sometimes means the top of the drive and sometimes the road.

If you know your driveway is steep, gravel, unsealed or too narrow for a high-roof van to turn in, say so when you book. It takes ten seconds and it is the difference between a smooth pick-up and a driver reversing two hundred metres down a hill.

Some hills addresses have no footpath at all

Plenty of streets in Mundaring, Glen Forrest and Darlington were never built with kerbs. Where there is no footpath, we set down on the verge or on the road itself, with the vehicle positioned to keep you away from traffic. In wet weather a gravel verge can be the least stable surface on the property, so we will usually choose the sealed road over it.

None of this stops the trip happening. It just works far better when it is planned rather than discovered.

Book returns from the hills, do not hope for one

Wheelchair accessible vehicles are thin on the ground east of Midland. A one-way trip up the hill leaves a driver with a long empty run back, and the practical effect is that same-day return pick-ups from the hills are the hardest ones we get asked for.

Book both legs when you book the first. If the return time is uncertain, give us your best guess and call to move it. That is a much better position to be in than starting the search from Mundaring at 4pm.
